Mac Mondays : Sharing

Ahhhh…. don’t we all love sharing? Well, Phan may disagree as i seemed to be very greedy with my food. Although, i must confess this is changing. I’ve gotten much better at sharing food now. No longer hoarding it away, not allowing people to taste what i’ve ordered, etc, etc… now i’ve got to learn to share my coca cola… *ahem*…

but on to Mac Mondays. My happy diversion from more pressing matters…

Today’s Mac Mondays is all about sharing. In the past, Mac’s have not been good sharers. PC’s were much better at sharing illegal files and the like… but the Mac has changed. (No i’m not going to teach you how to share illegal files… but I am going to teach you how to share almost everything else.)

Most of the system wide sharing starts in the System Preferences, in the Sharing panel. (System preferences is the light switch in your dock. Clicking on the Sharing icon takes you to a variety of ways you can share things from your mac.

1. Personal File Sharing: Turning this on allows other macs on the network to share your files. These computers have to be connected to you on a local network (which means, not over the internet). They can either connect through a guest user (only seeing files in your public folder) or if they know your user name and password, they can browse all the files on your computer.

2. Windows Sharing: This basically allows windows computers to connect to you. See how easy macs are. one check box and everything is hunky dory.

3. Personal Web Sharing: Clicking this box allows you to host a website from your computer. Just plop some HTML files in your ~/home/sites folder. (That’s the Sites folder in your Home directory).

The rest of them are pretty cool sharing things…FTP, sharing Printers, Xgrid (distributed computing with one click…)

But how about sharing other things? Did u know you could share scanners across the network? Digital cameras? Your iPhoto? And your iTunes?

To share a scanner or digital camera, open up the application, Image Capture. Go to the preferences of Image Capture, and there’s a sharing tab there. Just click share and you’re off. There’s even a way to share the device over the internet… but that’s another post.

Sharing iPhoto and iTunes are similar. Just open up the programme and go to the preferences. Click sharing, and you’re off! See, macs are fun and powerful. So share people. And make the most of your digital life.

Here’s a useful piece of software i picked up. It’s called Delicious Library. I use it to see who’s borrowed my books and DVD’s. It’s got a great interface, clean design, and it uses my video camera as a barcode scanner, and automatically looks up the title details and information from Amazon.

Not to mention, the details are great. DVD covers are glossed over and placed into nice cases, books have a sheen, and the bindings reflect hardcover and paperback… slick.

I had Chrissy come over on Friday and catalogue all the new theology books from Peter. Definitely worth a pick up if you’ve got alot of books or DVD’s, keep loaning them out, and losing them… this programme is a total lifesaver. Unless of course you’re Tuan, and have created your own access database to catalogue your Stens… :D
