Theology Tuesday

Yup. Tunes Tuesday was a good suggestion, and i’d gladly do it (to match new iTunes Tunes on Tuesday), unfortunately i’m not as prolific as HC, so that would probably be updated twice a year. But since i am a struggling Bible College student i thought Theology Tuesday would be a good idea. Give our young tender minds things to mull over. And give Nora a reason to post. haha.

Today’s Theology Tuesday Topic:
We were made in the image of God.
Yup. It’s because i’m working on an essay about it. I’ve been reading various systematic theology books about man’s importance, and what it means to be made in the image of God. Grudem’s IVP book on Systematic Theology describes it this way:

As we read the rest of Scripture, we realise that a full udnerstanding of man’s likeness to God would require a full understanding of who God is in his being and in his actions and a full undersatnding of who man is and what he does. The more we know about God and man the more similarities we will recognise and the more fully we will undersand what Scripture means when it says that man is in the iamge of God.

Now that’s pretty impressive. And it got me thinking about some of the ways we’re made in the image of God. One of the things that came to mind was simply how creative mankind is. As God is the creator (making an amazing world full of biology, chemistry and physics), so mankind seems to have this amazing ability to create as well. Computers, the internet, robotic dogs, flat pack furniture… the list is endless.

But what i’ve also come to realise is that mankind’s separation from God has lead to a distortion of His image. What that means is what we were originally intended for and what we’ve become are very different. So taking the example of us being creative, we’ve taken this creative energy and used it for evil… not good. Like making bombs, missiles, Grand Theft Auto…

so with that thought in mind i leave you with this link illustrating how creative people can be, and at the same time slightly unnerving… cat lovers (sue, tuan, kiet) should get a kick out of this:

  8. dez says:

Wow, I’ve seen that Systematic Theology at the Christian bookshop where I work – and now I actually know someone who’s read it! It always looked really intimidating to me! Just look at the words seperately:

    Systematic

That’s sounds scary by itself – what system, whose system, why does there have to be a system at all?

    And then add:

    Theology

(Gulp. Dez runs away wailing. Dez comes back.) And then whilst the blue and white cover is slightly alluring, the density of the book makes you realise that you are getting into something pretty heavy. Which probably explains why I’m finished the penultimate book of the Left Behind series today.

Any views on The Purpose Driven Life? I would be interested to hear (well viewing) them seeing as our bible study group started using them today. I know Sam (and the Philippines) love it…

    hi bert,
that is an enormous, moment of epiphany kind of topic… been doing quite a bit of reading lately on this, for a paper, and would highly recommend wolfhart pannenberg’s systematic theology, volume 2.

God is totally ‘other’, so what does it mean to be made in his image? My moment of epiphany came when i realised that, to be the ‘image of God’ means to be human; wholly and perfectly human. This whole and perfect image of God can only be found in Jesus Christ, so it is only in fellowship with Christ that we can ‘become human’ like we were supposed to be, before creation was subverted… but that’s another topic!

    i read your essay!:D
